Facts about the 2006 "Birds of a Feather" Quilt...
|
The 2006 Birds of a Feather quilt and pillow coverlet is composed of 30 blocks that were designed, made and donated by bird lovers from across the U.S. Each block is approximately 12 x 12 inches and is surrounded by a 2 inch border of 'black eyelash' from Jinny Beyer's Palette (# 9410-03) collection. Those blocks with a sky blue background are embellished with machine embroidered parrots, a wren bird house or a canary. [view the 2006 blocks] The other blocks are either machine appliquéd or pieced. The final outer border, on the quilt and on the sides of the pillow coverlet, is from Jinny's Millennium II ( # 3305-02) collection.
The artist,
Kay Steadman, donated quilting supplies and expertly quilted the quilt squares contributed by Quilting Bird volunteers nation-wide. Quilting supplies and piecing of the squares were donated by Pam Thompson of Chantilly Virginia. The results are a beautiful, unique queen size Quilt and a separate Pillow Topper.
Parrot owners and quilters volunteered their efforts to provide unique quilt blocks that were to be used in the 2006 quilt. During the summer of 2006, the quilt blocks were pieced together and another generous donor offered to quilt the quilt and another provided the materials as well as the labor.
Another donor this year provided the team with printed tickets that were used in the 2006 drawing.
Each donated quilt block measured 12.5 x 12.5 inches. The blocks again this year followed the theme of "Birds of a Feather" which is back by popular demand. For example a traditional nine patch quilt block was made using cotton fabrics and was themed on the Virginia state bird – a cardinal. Another quilt block was prepared to depict a bird house. All birds look for a home to nest in, whether
it’s a man-made house, or a more traditional nest. Macaws, cockatoos, African parrots and cockatiels are some of the wonderful drawings that have been submitted and are being worked on. Quilt blocks are as varied as the imaginations of our donors.
The quilt layout remained flexible depending on the number of quilt blocks that were received. However, it was decided that since the quilt blocks were so stunning and to allow them the recognition they deserved, each block was surrounded by sashing.
